The following is from Charles H. Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening Daily Devotional –
It is the work of the Holy Spirit to turn our eyes from self to Jesus. Satan’s work is just the opposite. Satan insinuates, “Your sins are too great to pardon. You have no faith. You do not repent enough. You will never be able to continue to the end. You do not have the joy of God’s children. You have only a weak grip on Jesus.” These are thoughts about self, and we will never find comfort or assurance if we look to them.
The Holy Spirit turns our eyes entirely away from self. When He tells us that we are nothing, He tells us that Christ is all in all. Remember, it is not your hold on Christ, but Christ Himself that saves. It is not your joy in Christ, but Christ Himself that saves. It is not even your faith in Christ, though that is the instrument; it is Christ’s blood and merits. Do not even look at your hand that is grasping Christ; look to Christ Himself. Do not look to your hope either, but to Jesus, the source of your hope. Do not look to your faith, but to Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith (Hebrews 12:2).
We will never find happiness by looking at our prayers, works, or feelings. It is who Jesus is, not what we are that gives the soul rest.
If we want to overcome Satan and have peace with God, we must be “looking to Jesus.” Simply keep your eyes on Him. Let His death, His suffering, His merits (virtues,) His glories, and His intercession be fresh in your mind. When you wake in the morning, look to Him. Do not let your hopes and fears come between you and Jesus. Follow after Him. He will never fail you:
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesu’s blood and righteousness:
I dare not rust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesu’s name.
