Faith is based on circumstantial evidence.
We use both to live successful lives. Science is based on knowledge. And life is based on faith. (2 Cor 5:7) We have faith that the car will start as soon as we turn the ignition key, so we don’t go out an hour early to make sure its ready when we need to leave for work/school. Astronomers had faith that Pluto existed before there was empirical evidence that validated the circumstantial evidence. Ask an Astronomer
God’s existence cannot be proven by empirical evidence but there are massive amounts of circumstantial evidence. The Case For a Creator
Religious people can be divided up into a number of basic boxes – True believers, apathetic followers, and truth seekers.
- The true believers “know” God exists because they’ve been willing to be vulnerable to God’s operating on their heart, and they like the results. (There are, of course, those ‘true believers” who have nefarious agendas who use religion as their justification. Their “God” however is their desire to harm, not the God of the Bible that cares about his children. And there are “true believers” whose God commands the destruction of others.)
- Apathetic followers are those who were raised in a religious system, and unthinkingly adhere to it because it’s habit. They may or may not know God exists, but don’t care either way..
- The truth seekers are ones who are new to the inquiry, (though they may have been apathetic followers for years,) and are willing to open themselves up to new experiences and insights, but haven’t yet had the experiences that move them into the “true believer” status.
But those who cannot allow themselves to believe will ignore all the circumstantial evidence and be very sure that there is no evidence of God’s existence. That would require allowing themselves to be subject to someone else’s authority. Not an option – therefore God doesn’t exist!
