Heb 12:1 reads “… and the sin that so easily entangles us…”
Some authorities say that this sin is a lack of faith. And I wouldn’t argue with that assessment. But I suspect we can be more specific. The sin that so easily entangles us is relying on our own reasoning. (Pro 3:5) We have a tendency to see a situation through our own eyes rather than through Jesus’ eyes, and then react to our perception.
But our reaction is based on a limited base of knowledge, perhaps skewed feelings about the situation, and more than likely our own personal agenda. The alternative is to rely on our Shepherd who has unlimited knowledge and faith, and so knows the best possible way of responding that will advance His Father’s kingdom work.
We have the mind of Christ. (1 Co 2:16) His unlimited knowledge and faith are available to us. We grow to Christian maturity by seeking to hear our Shepherd’s voice more and more often in the course of our lives. As we do that, He transforms our hearts and minds, and conforms our faith and will to His faith and will. “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me…” He says. (Mt 11:29) In effect, He was saying, ” Become my co-laborer on God’s mission, and I will conform you to my image.”
It is self-reliance that entangles our hearts while on God’s mission.
