What follows are summaries of the Daily Devotional commentaries in Oswald Chambers’ classic My Utmost for His Highest. He devotes almost ten percent of his commentaries to the subject of surrendering our right to ourselves to Jesus Christ.
If you are at that place in your life where you know that you can’t do a good job of leading your life, and you’re ready to totally trust Jesus to be your Shepherd, then may I suggest you print this out, and read and meditate on it daily?
Date | The Meat |
1/01 | Be intentional about being your best for God’s glory |
1/31 | Proclaim redemption. That’s Jesus’ light. |
2/04 | “The love of Christ compels us…” 2 Co 5:14
Compelled by the majesty of His power. |
2/21 | To be surrendered to God is of more value than our personal holiness.
The issue is never about being of use, but rather of being of value to God Himself. It is not what He uses us for, but rather that we are available for Him to use. |
2/24 | “Once the love of God has been poured out into our hearts by the Holy Spirit” we begin to deliberately identify ourselves with Jesus’ interests and purposes in other peoples’ lives. Ro 5:5 |
3/04 | Paul refused to use his life for anything but the ministry he had received. |
3/08 | Surrender all your sin, all your pretenses, all your goals, all your everything. |
3/09 | Walk with Jesus. Once you know God’s will for you, all you need to do is live a natural life of absolute dependence on Jesus. The secret of walking with Jesus is to show no concern for the uncertainties that lie ahead. |
3/12 | Genuine surrender is showing preference for Jesus over self. |
4/17 | Deliberately commit your will to Jesus Christ. Maintain your relationship with Jesus Christ, and your convictions and consistency will take care of themselves. |
4/27 | Seek God, not what He can give you. |
4/28 | Abandon your old life to Jesus. He will give you a new life. |
5/20
|
We must discipline our nature to not succumb to our moods. The Christian life is one of spiritual courage and determination lived out in our flesh. |
5/30 | Abandon yourself to the adventure God offers you. |
6/13 | Surrendering your right to yourself, and responding to Jesus’ invitation “Come, follow me,” produces great creativity. |
6/18 | You will hear Jesus’ voice more clearly when you’re willing to risk obeying Him. |
6/20 | The real business of your life is intercessory prayer. |
7/11 | Recognize Jesus in every circumstance. |
7/12 | We’re here to build the body of Christ to its fullest capacity, the fullness of Christ. Eph 4:13, 16 |
8/25 | “I delight to do your will, O God.” Ps 40:8 |
8/31 | “…so that My joy might remain in you and your joy might be full.” Jn 15:11
“I delight to do your will, O God.” Ps 40:8 |
9/02 | “He who believes in me… out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” Jn 7:38
This requires total surrender of self so as to not interfere with the flow of Jesus’ light through you. |
9/13 | SURRENDER
For Deliverance – “Come to me… you will find rest for your souls.” Mt 11:28 For Devotion – “…If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.” Mt 16:24 For Death – “…united with (Jesus) in the likeness of His death” (Ro 6:5) until nothing appeals to you that did not appeal to Him. |
9/28 | Make your oneness with Jesus your highest priority … over both people and things. Mk 10:21; Lk 14:26 |
10/23 | You are a new creation in Christ, your old self has passed away. You have so much trust in Christ that you only want God Himself, not His blessings. 2 Co 5:17 |
11/03 | “I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live, but Christ lives in me” Gal 2:20
That means breaking the hard outer shell of independence from God, liberating yourself into oneness with Him, choosing absolute loyalty to Jesus. It means becoming His bond-servant. |
11/10 | Be a “….fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ…” 1 Thes 3:2
The purpose of my life belongs to Christ, not me. When I stop telling Him what I want, He can freely use me for His purposes. |
11/15 | Christian maturity is achieved when we’re no longer conscious of serving God, only of being dependent on Him. |
11/30 | If you maintain your personal relationship with your personal Redeemer and Lord, letting everything else go, God will fulfill His purpose through your life. |
12/09 | “Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Gal 5:24
I must give up my right to myself, my natural independence, and my self-will. This is where I will fight my greatest battle. I must realize who Jesus Christ is before I will deny myself. Our good opposes God’s best. If we do not purposely sacrifice the natural, the supernatural will never become natural to us. It is not a question of praying, but of sacrificing, and thereby performing His will. |
12/11 | Break the hard shell of individuality that insists on its right to independence so that the real life, the spiritual life, can emerge. |
12/12 | Once you surrender your rights to yourself to God, your true personal nature begins responding to God immediately. |
12/22 | My relationship with God is not based on intellect or emotion, but on my willingness to trust god. |
12/27 | Our battles are first won or lost in the secret places of our will in God’s presence, never in the view of the whole world. It is here that we become lazy Christians or on fire for God. |
